The excitement of the Academy Awards is just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate the magic of cinema than by hosting your very own Oscars party at home? In this comprehensive guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to create a glamorous and unforgettable evening for you and your guests to view the biggest night for movies. Plus, we have expert predictions for the night’s winners.
Pre-party prep
As you embark on the journey to host a stellar Oscars party, start by setting the stage with themed invitations. Whether it’s a digital invite with Hollywood flair or a movie ticket-inspired design, make sure to communicate the date, time and dress code to create anticipation and set the tone for the night.
Next, transform your living space into a Hollywood haven with carefully chosen decorations. Think of the nominated pictures to draw inspiration from and encourage your guests to embrace the theme through their attire or even dressing up as their favorite movie characters.
Stephen Yanni, Editor for 101MoviesaYear.com recommends thinking outside the box when it comes to selecting a theme. “Instead of hosting the expected Barbenheimer theme party,” he says, “why not embrace a Poor Things twist? Imagine a Steampunk soirée featuring Barbie and Ken in Victorian elegance—top hats, corsets and lace.” By embracing this year’s nominees, through decoration and decor, you’re ensured to transport your guests into a cinematic wonderland, making your Oscars party an unforgettable experience.
Some other Oscar party themes to try, based on nominees:
- “Pink” themed party inspired by Barbie
- A 1940s fashion-themed soiree inspired by Maestro
- New York-themed party with Korean cuisine and drinks inspired by Past Lives

Setting the scene
Create a cozy and inviting viewing area by arranging seating for optimal viewing. Consider adding touches like blankets, cushions and dim lighting to enhance the movie night atmosphere.
Elevate your snack game with a stylish snack station featuring classic movie treats like popcorn, candy and soda. For an extra touch of sophistication, offer a variety of finger foods and cocktails inspired by nominated films, like an Oppenheimer-inspired “atomic” punch, Christmas cookies inspired by The Holdovers or Korean BBQ wings inspired by Past Lives.

Entertainment and activities for every Oscars party
Set up a red carpet area for guests to strike a pose before the show starts, creating a perfect photo opportunity. A photo booth with props can add an extra element of fun and create lasting memories.
To engage your guests in the excitement of the awards, provide ballots for them to make predictions on the winners. This not only adds an element of friendly competition but also keeps everyone invested in the evening, as they’ll root for their favorite films of the year.
Craig Hammell, Founder of the Secret Movie Club, explains how to perfectly facilitate Oscars predictions. He explains that “Participants must fill out a ballot and turn it in before the first winner of the night is announced.” He continues on in saying, “As the winners are announced, the casted ballots will create a sense of tension and suspense as the night goes on. Then, the winner(s) can receive anything from a toy Oscar (and have to give an Oscar acceptance speech) to a movie-themed gift card!”
Predicting the winners: Experts weigh in
Give your party guests an edge in the competition by reading them some expert opinions on the best films and performances of the year.
Caroline Collins, Associate Director at Film Pittsburgh, thinks some Three Rivers Film Fest favorites will take home awards. “We loved Perfect Days and think it could win Best International Feature, ” she continues, “The Holdovers is a strong contender for Best Picture, and in the Short Animation category, watch for Ninety-five Senses or Pacyderme, which were popular favorites at Pittsburgh Shorts!”
Yadav Venugopal, owner of TheMovieJunkie, describes the 2024 Oscars nominees as a “mixed bag.” Venugopal explains this sentiment in describing the range of movies, “You have movies ranging from Chris Nolan’s Oppenheimer to Yorgos Lanthimos’ masterpiece Poor Things.” In terms of predictions, Venugopal makes choices for coveted categories, “For Best Actress, my pick is Emma Stone for Poor Things and for Best Picture, my selection is Oppenheimer.”
Benoit Lelièvre, Film Critic and Owner of Dead End Follies, expresses his opinion that Oppenheimer should win big, “Emily Blunt should win Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Christopher Nolan should win Best Directing and Ludwig Göransson deserves the Best Original Score. It [Oppenheimer] might not be the most heartwarming or socially pertinent story, but it was the one that was told the best.”
